Ventilated Partial Cavitation

Ventilated partial cavitation can be employed in the practice of ship hull drag reduction by generating a bubble film on the bottom of the ship. We focus on investigating the flow physics including topology variation and air entrainment mechanisms involved in the ventilated partial cavitation.

Investigation of partial cavity with back-step setup

In this study, we observed different types of partial cavity with a back-step setup (from top to bottom: foamy cavity, Transition cavity, open cavity and two branch cavity). The topologies of the partial cavity are related to its drag reduction capability. We are trying to connect the  topologies of the partical cavity to the air entrainment mechanisms of the partial cavity under various flow conditions.
